Covid tracking update for March 24th

So I wanted to make some quick fixes and add today’s data (the code in R to process the data and make the choropleth was written yesterday). I think I’m going to try to do this for a few weeks.

Big takeway is that while Los Angeles and San Francisco have most of the infections, they’re not likely to be the first places overwhelmed because they have so many ICU beds, and presumably staff and equipment to go with them. Instead, expect surrounding areas like Santa Cruz and Marin county. Take Santa Cruz for example, not a ton of infections but according to the California Department of Public Health there’s only 13 Intensive Care beds in the county: 10 at Dominican Hospital and 3 at Watsonville Community Hospital. There’s just not a lot of capacity there, you could overwhelm it with a baseball team.

I changed the scale from yesterday so it goes from green at 0% to dark red at 100% where the previous scale just went from the minimum to maximum values, or about 0-15%. You can still see some discoloration but it’s slight.

Here’s the table. Small but significant bumps from yesterday in the SF adjacent areas.
